With the taste of disappointment palpable still on our palates Anita (@PetiteFoodie), Tien (@distienct) and I headed down to Thierry Chocolaterie Patisserie Cafe for some delicious desserts!

We ordered a few different things to share: Chocolate Succe (hazelnut meringue+dense chocolate mousse+tempered 70% chocolate with a gold leaf), Fromage Au Mousse Blanc (formage blanc mousse+lemon curd+cassis linzer) & Strawberry Tart (almond sable crust+lemon verbena pastry cream+fresh BC strawberries).

Let me tell you…these desserts were amazing!  I’m on the fence when it comes to Thierry’s macarons, but these little desserts were exactly what I expected them to be!  Rich, decadent, punchy flavors and a delight to the eyes and the stomach.

It’s hard to even choose a favorite because each of them were distinctly their own.  I’d say I was more partial to the formage au mousse blanc because it’s flavors that I absolutely adore, but that strawberry tart had us coming back for more and nothing could beat the richness of the chocolate succe.

Full, happy and delighted.  Success!

Tim Horton’s

August 14, 2011

November 23rd, 2010.  Tim Horton’s, You Don’t Fool Me!

tim horton's chili combo

tim horton's chili combo

After a movie and a DDR dance battle we all had to go nourish ourselves….alright, Tim Horton’s it is!!  I got the Chili Combo, which is the soup with a bun, coffee and a donut of choice.  The caramel apple turnover was calling out to me…so that’s what I got in substitute of the donut.

The chili, as you all know, is not really chili.  I mean, it’s disguised as chili..but come on, Wendy’s chili is closer to chili than this!  It’s not spicy and you can’t even get spicy sauce.  Whatever.  The turnover was oh so sweet, sticky, flaky and yummy~!!

September 30th, 2010. Post-Workout Dinner: Cactus Club Cafe

It’s a known fact: a post-workout appetite is the WORST for ruining your self-resolve in terms of diet.  Now, I’m not on a diet, but after a workout I’m as hungry as if I were.  After a productive workout session with Nabil we headed over to the newish Cactus Club Cafe in White Rock.  Yes.  I know.  Cactus Club again.  To be fair I tried completely different things this day!! It was like a totally different experience…c’mon~~!

I really like the decor of this location both inside and out.  It definitely blends in with the whole White Rock persona….pacific chic 🙂

Rob’s Goat Cheese & Feta Flatbread: grape tomatoes, pesto, caramalized onion, arugula, balsamic glaze and maldon sea salt.  I was surprised that the flatbread was as good as it was!  Lots of flavors, good ingredients, and the flatbread was soft enough that it was easy to cut through, yet with the firmness to not flop around.  Good choice, Nabil!

Sezchuan Green Beans (with side of rice).  Call me a sucker..but i like sezchuan green beans.  I’m sure this dish is not the one most servers will push, lol!  The beans were cooked just right with good seasoning and the rice that came on the side was also cooked how I prefer, which is slightly dry.

My dinner:  Creole Steak + Prawns – 9oz. certified angus sirloin rubbed with cajun spices.  spicy creole butter, white wine sauteed creole jumbo prawns, mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables.  The mashed potato was nice and creamy, the steak was perfect, and the prawns were a good size.  And, really, who doesn’t love any kind of flavored butter?  The only thing I have beef with is the asparagus.  Seruously, who made you king of “seasonal vegetables”??  Never was fond of it as a kid and still not a fan today.  Makes your pee smell

He had the Short Rib Sandwich – caramelized onions, beef jus and emmental cheese on toasted sourdough.  It was a big sandwich!  The bread was nice and toasty with great sourdough flavor, the meat was tender, loved the cheese and of course he got the chipotle aioli for the fries

Apple Galette – a classic combination of flavors; warmed granny smith apples, a hint of cinnamon on a flay puff pastry topped with vanilla ice cream and finished with caramel.  Oh my…what a wonderful dessert to wrap it all up with!  Loved the flakiness of the pastry, the rich, sticky, weight of of the caramel, the light vanilla ice cream and the fact that the apples still had a bit of bite to them.  YuM~!!

I know, I know..another Cactus Club post..but it’ a diffeent location!  Besides..it’s the bane of living in the suburb of a suburb…there’s nothing really interesting or new..and then even in the suburbs the best thing to be had late in the evening is Cactus Club.  But the food is good, so whatevs!!

Mini Pinwheels

September 1, 2010

July 7th, 2010. Yummy Pinwheels~!!!

jenn's pinwheels

jenn's pinwheels

I love puff pastry!  Well….pastry in general…I mean who can resist the flaky, buttery goodness?  I had some smoked serrano ham left and some spicy mustard on hand so I figured, why not make some mini pinwheels?  Bite-sized=easy to eat without the mess and easy to transport!  I rolled out some puff pastry and made 2 kinds of pinwheels.  One savory and one sweet!  The sweet one is strawberry jam pinwheels.  The savory is spicy mustard and serrano ham with aged cheddar.

jenn's pinwheels

jenn's pinwheels

As you can see I found that it wasn’t easy to cut these into perfect circles…did I defrost my puf pastry for too long?  Maybe it was too soft?  Ir it could be that the contents were too mushy…ah, whatever!  They turned out round enough in the end!  One other problem was that the jam made the sweet pinwheels stick to the wax paper…Hmm…!

jenn's pinwheels

Look how cute these turned out!  They were pretty yummy!  Pow!!  Lots of flavor in one bite!  The drawback?  I was extremely sick and had a very tender/sore throat/mouth so it was actually quite difficult to eat these…but that’s okay, because after my healed I made another batch!
