In Vancouver you definitely have to have sushi!  It’s a must. Like, really. I mean it!

To kick off our spring break I took us to Alpha Global Sushi Bar. Yelp and other food reviews have almost always steered me in the right direction and I’d been hearing about this place for a while. While it’s at a higher price point than many the promise of unique twists and good quality just outside the Yaletown neighborhood had me anticipating a good meal 🙂

The space is small, with very limited seating, typical of your more traditional Japanese style joints. It’s cozy.  The interesting thing about Alpha is that you also get a hefty book on Japanese history along with your table and menu. Intellectual!

Mojitos are a must on sunny days and when reuniting with a friend! Refreshing, minty, subtly sweet and crisp!  My favorite cocktail 🙂

The Ebi Fry seemed to be a fan favorite, so we ordered it. Light, crispy, and super hot on the inside! The cool tartar sauce helped cool down our tongues and added a tangy punch!

We ordered the Spicy Tuna Sashimi with sliced onion, seaweed, green onion with a spicy ginger sauce.  Fresh tuna has a clean, sweet flavor and your teeth sink in the surface and then you get a slightly bouncy give towards the middle.  The spicy ginger sauce was refreshing and paired in a lovely way with the tuna!

The famous and namesake Alpha Roll has mango, tobiko, mayo crab, wrapped in albacore tuna, and avocado with a plum wine mustard mayo sauce.  You know me, I love sauce!  This roll was again, quite clean tasting and the sweet and rich sauces just added a decadence to it.  I am usually not a fan of mango, but this roll was nice 🙂

For our second roll I went with the Philly Roll.  Sure, it’s one of those “been there, done that” items, but I can’t help my love for cream cheese and smoked salmon 😉  While not being exactly exciting I was happy that they didn’t skimp on the smoked salmon as many places do.

Mind blowing moment: The Mentaiko Udon. Like, MIND. BLOWN. It was essentially udon noodles in a spicy cod roe sauce…..but what made it so amazing was that it was tossed in BUTTER! Like, WHAT???!!! How could something so simple, make something SO AMAZING!! Oh, right, IT’S BUTTER!  Okay, maybe I’m just a little crazy, but this was so so so so awesome. I loved it!!

Despite the fact that it seemed like a solid meal I couldn’t help feeling at the end that I wasn’t quite satisfied. Like, even though we were both full it still left me feeling like I was wanting something more. Hmmmmmm………

Tofu Cream Cheese Balls

January 21st, 2012. Tofu Cream Cheese Balls

I was trying to think of some creative ways to incorporate tofu into my meal today and thought…. “Hmmm, why not make something bite-sized!”.  I rummaged through the fridge and pulled out everything that I felt could be relevant to this idea of a deep-fried tofu mash.

I used this deliciously delicate ready-to-eat raw tofu from Pulmuone and made a mixture of crispy real bacon bits, cream cheese and some parsley for a punch of real herb flavor.  I then rolled the balls around in Italian herbed fine breadcrumbs.

They look pretty delish, right?  But….I actually didn’t like it as much as i thought i would.  I think next time I need to use firmer tofu and perhaps work on the breadcrumb exterior because it kept falling apart while being fried!  But it was a good idea 🙂

How awesome is flying prestige business class? Complimentary slippers, blanket, pillow and travel kit containing everything from face cream to eye gel and even a brush! Oh, and they were offering guava juice…I became a guava juice junkie on this trip. LOL!

The other thing about prestige class on Korean Air is that they keep the food coming   No starving on this flight!  Lunch was a 6 course event.  Literally.  They bring out a tray with a cloth napkin, real silverware, a nice menu…they take your entree order and then you just cool your heels and wait for them to bring on the first course!

Pre-Drink Service: Herb Cream Cheese rolled with Roasted Zucchini and Eggplant.  I would have liked it to be a bit warmer, but it sufficed.  I love cream cheese…how can this go wrong?

Appetizer: Seared Tuna with Soy Sesame Dressing.  Wow.  Extravagance.  Literally, I was wondering how I was going to finish this and then eat the rest of the food to come…haha!  It was well cooked, the dressing was yummy, and I was quite happy.

Soup: Tomato Cream Soup with a Breadstick.  Oh, my….I loved this soup!  I am not always the biggest fan of tomato soup, but I think that’s why I enjoyed this one.  It was more savory and earthy than a straight up tomato soup.  With a pinch of salt & pepper is was quite nice

Grilled Beef Tenderloin with Thyme Red Wine Sauce served with Potato, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cherry Tomato & Patty Pan Squash.  I was impressed that they actually got my steak cooked to medium rare..just like I asked!  As for the veggies…well, there’s only so much airline food can aspire to be…but it really wasn’t that bad 🙂

So, to start off the winding down portion of the meal I got some Camembert & Danish Blue Cheese accompanied by some Cream Crackers and Green and Purple Grapes.  How’d they know I love cheese??
