March 23rd, 2013. Capstone Tea & Fondue

Since we couldn’t sit down for teas and treats at Soirette we headed over to Capstone Tea & Fondue on Robson instead.  Nab just started working here as the manager and I wanted to be supportive of his new job.

With a clean, white and green color scheme and plenty of efficient seating space for a small cafe. Capstone offers variations of tea and tea lattes to accompany the chocolate and cheese fondues.

Since we’re sweet, we went the sweet route with the Chocolate Fondue Sampler 😉  The café states that they offer 56% semi-sweet Blegian dark chocolate for dipping.

I was surprised to find out that all their pastries and baked goods are made in house.  Delicious little biscuits, moist cakes, I probably could have just eaten a whole plate of just that!

The fruit is your usual fare.  The grapes were slightly difficult to dip because it was so slippery and the skewer kept bouncing off, but I loved the strawberries and pineapple 😀

We also ordered an add-on side of the ice cream truffles and cheesecake truffles!

The fun part was the different kinds of toppings we could roll our fondue dipped treats in!  Compliments of the house 😀

The chocolate had a sort of sheen and coated the items well. We were definitely having fun dipping and noshing on the abundance of goodies!

I worried that the ice cream truffles would melt too quickly, but it didn’t turn out to be a problem 🙂

How much fun did we have?  Lots of fun!  The establishment was constantly busy the whole time we were there and the atmosphere was nice and cheerful 🙂  We had  really fun time!

January 25th, 2013. Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival!

vancouver hot chocolate festival

It came to my attention that Vancouver has this newer fesitval going on each year… The Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival!  Participating patisseries, chocolatiers, and cafes in and around Vancouver offer a special hot chocolate and treat.  Kind of a mini-dine out with chocolates!  This is definitely my kind of festival!

I searched for any participating places in the tri-city area and I found that Rubens Chocolates in Port Moody was the only one nearby!  So I made it out there for the De Dutchie!  A Spice Cookie Hot Chocolate inspired by the Netherlands accompanied by a Dutch Spice Cookie!

I love when they use spices with chocolate and this was no exception.  Adding a depth to the flavor and just some extra sparkle this was so so yummy and wonderfully warming for this wet and dark winter night!  They also included a chocolate on my plate as well 😀

November 11th, 2012. Girls’ Day @ Mink!

It’s not every day I’m in White Rock/South Surrey.  Despite being a nice little city with some great hidden gems for eating, it’s just so out of the way! Of course a good reason to go is to see Tracy!  A more beautiful, strong and faithful soul I have yet to meet amongst my peers.

JooHee and I took the opportunity to hang out with Tracy and her 2 daughters at her little condo, but then she suggested we go down to Mink!  Yes, yes yes 😀

After a little bit of browsing we decided to share the S’mores Chocolate Fondue option!  If you haven’t figured it out yet: I love fondue. I LOVE s’mores!  Perfect choice!

The platter consisted of graham crackers, marshmallows, and a pot of melted chocolate with a little hibachi for us to roast the marshmallows on!  The silver tray it came on was such a nice, elegant touch 🙂

While we did have to go to the counter to ask them to re-light the candle burning under the chocolate a couple times we still had a fun and sticky time!

October 29th, 2012. Ruben’s Chocolates

Ruben’s Chocolates on Brew Street in the Sutterbrook complex of Port Moody has always been on my radar, but blame that being close often puts things off I’d never actually even been inside the place!  I guess the other reason for that is that they always seem to be closed when I get the urge 😛

It’s a warm little establishment with gelato and an assortment of artistic chocolates, cupcakes and a few other sweets.

I was surprised to see that they actually had a real chocolate “wheel” behind the counter!  I knew then and there that I must try a hot chocolate!

A mixture of the melted chocolate and steamed milk, I have to say…I was slightly disappointed as I would have liked to taste more richness and chocolatey-ness from my beverage..but it did have that great authentic feel to it and at least it wasn’t the watery kind of hot chocolate you get at most places.

All in all it’s a nice little chocolate shop and I would definitely come for another visit and hopefully try some goodies 😀

April 6th, 2012. Lifegroup Girls’ Easter Luncheon

Us girls in Lifegroup wanted to take the opportunity of a long weekend to get together and bond over tea, lunch-stuff, cupcakes, etc.. Hello, Easter Long Weekend!

Fortuitously we were blessed with an amazingly sunny day! After another long and gloomy winter season it was just so nice to see such brilliant sunshine. Definitely made the drive down to White Rock pleasant.

We’d originally wanted to do a high-tea sort of thing, but seeing as how the good ones are so far out in Vancouver and the ones in the neighborhood seemed a bit steep in price we came to the compromise of a luncheon!

It seemed like a better way to go so that not everyone had to be subject to a group fixed price and we could be more flexible.  Tracycakes was the unanimous vote.

The shop is nicely situated on the waterfront strip in White Rock and is full of the most precious knick knacks and things for the home.  A mix of modern-rustic-country-nautica the shutter bugs among us just couldn’t get enough!

Pair that with the cute tea ware and adorable baked goods in the pastry display case..yeah…really….it took all my will-power to stay in my seat.  Haha! 😉

I chose to have the Chicken Pot Pie as my meal.  I’m kind of a sucker for them..!  Chicken, diced potatoes, peas, carrots and onions in a gravy topped off with a hat of crisp, flaky pastry.  Not exactly a pie, the gravy was runny, but it was okay.

The salad was Tracy’s Signature Salad with strings of beets and carrots toasted pecans, feta cheese and their signature raspberry poppyseed dressing.  Funny enough I thought the greens were a bit…tough…..but other than that I loved the touch of cream from the feta, the natural slightly sweet from the carrots and beets and even the pecans were nice.  Nice dressing, too!

I couldn’t come here and NOT have a sweet treat. After MUCH contemplation I finally settled on 2 babycakes: the Lovely Lavender – a vanilla cupcake with Bavarian filling topped with lovely purple butter cream icing, and the ‘Smores – chocolate cupcake with marshmallow filling topped with chocolate butter icing and graham cracker dust.

Both were incredibly moist and delicious and beautiful! I think they hit all the notes well. Pretty to look at, great scent, and delicious in my mouth! Sure they could be sweet for some, but I think that’s why the babycakes area good way to go. Bite-sized things are great!  How amazing is this cupcake??!

Yaisa also had the Lovely Lavender as well as the Ra~Ra~Raspberry, a rich chocolate cake filled with whip cream and topped with raspberry icing.  Both so lovely!

Can’t remember exactly what it was that Camille got, but it was sweet, it was super rich and definitey measured up to her chocolate-tooth expectations 😉  What a wonderful afternoon!

We talked relationships, family, not wanting kids, being fabulously single, career and more over tea and 3-tiers of delicious finger snacks!  Really, all the cupcakes, sandwiches, scones, sausage roll bites and tarts were so decadent and scrumptious!  Delish and so well done!

October 2nd, 2010. Cafe Medina: Brunch Mecca!

cafe medina

We’re at it again!  Richard will blurt out some amazing place or thing he wants to try, I’ll confirm that it is indeed a supposed legend and off we go!!  Today’s treasure cove: Cafe Medina in Gastown for brunch!

cafe medina

cafe medina

With Chef Nico Schuermans at the helm, this little gem truly is an amazing little cafe/bistro.  Actually, it’s on, like a whole different level, with the amazing space they have aquired, the ultra downtown chic decor, and the neighborhood they are fortunate to be in!  It’s no wonder people will wait over an hour for a table here…which is exactly what Richard and I did!  Even getting there at a decent time there was still a long line-up!  As the minutes inched by our stomaches growled louder and louder and we drooooooled with anticipation….!

cafe medina

cafe medina

When it was finally our turn we were led in through the narrow front door, past the front cafe area, and through a short brick passageway..into another dining area!  with high ceilings, wooden flooring, tall windows and close seating, it was small, and cozy, yet had the feeling of space and you didn’t feel suffocated.

cafe medina

I love that we just plopped ourselves in the midst of hipsters, trendy Vancouverites and vintage fashionistas and tourists and blended right in.  Above all else, we were all here to worship and enjoy the food

cafe medina

First up were the Belgian Waffles: Literally these can be smelled on the streetside while you’re wating for your table and it is torture!!  Ah, the sweet scent of fresh, homemade waffles…!  These were not overly big, a good thickness and were the perfect density.  A wonderful base for some wonderful toppings!

Our 3 choices of toppings were the Milk Chocolate Lavender, White Chocolate Pistachio Rosewater, and the Fig Orange Marmalade.  Delish!!!  Delicate flavors, excellently dippable, and oh, my…so wonderful!!!  Waffles all fancy-style 😉

The long awaited Lavender Lattes!!  Ah, worth every minute of the wait.  The lavender flavor was light, but still could be discerned through the espresso.  It was kinda of funny, Richard and I delicately sipping our lattes…then closing our eyes in extacy….LOL!

cafe medina

The Les Boulettes was our main dish: 2 poached eggs, spicy Moroccan lamb and beef meatballs, cilantro, houmus & raita.  Hearty meatballs, zesty (but not overly acidic) tomato sauce, a poached egg to lend a creaminess, and a great bunch of fresh flavor from the cilantro.  Oh, Lord…we were in brunch paradise…!

cafe medina

The focaccia bread and houmus with a layer of raita on top came on the side.  Good toast on the bread, loaded with garlic and herbs, and the houmus…oh, so good!!  The coolness of the raita and the earthiness of the houmus paired well with the Les Boulettes.

Now, what could make an already amazing brunch even more epic….BACON!  Trust.  This is the best $5.00 we spent on bacon!!  Look at the color, the cut, the fat to meat ratio…can you smell it? taste it? I DIE, I DIE!! So incredibly good!  Savory with a slather of maple glazed sweetness…Mmmmmmmmmmm!  This put everything over the top.  It slayed us, liteally,  We were so in awe of the combinations of foods from this brunch that we barely made the 45 minute long drive back to the suburbs….!

Best. Brunch. EVER!!!!!!!!!!!
