Banana Leaf on Robson

April 27th, 2013. Banana Leaf Robson

So I felt like a bright lunch would be a great way to go so I had planned for us to go to the new Banana Leaf that just opened up on Robson.

I ordered the appetizer platter as my lunch and I was pretty pleased! I love love love options and this dish came with the Papaya and Pineapple Salad, Chicken Satay, Spring Rolls, Roti Canai and Calamari.

Finger food, check. Sauces, check. Flavor, check! The roti canai was stretchy but with a crispy crust, the calamari was a tad dry, but acceptable with a salty and crumbly crispy coating, the spring rolls were deep fried goodness and while the satay could have been punchier with the flavor, it was still not bad! As for the salad, the dressing was bright, sweet, acidic, and overall was fresh!

Robert, on the other hand, was very disappointed with his curry dish. Being well traveled and also being from LA he’d know!  He said it was bland and forgettable and he even left a scathing comment card! Yikes!

I love Portage Bay Cafe in the University District, so I suggested we go there for brunch before we started our day of errands and shopping.

Nothing like some down home organic grub to start the day! I mean…probably not something I’d be able to whip up at home…but you know…that’s what Portage Bay Cafe is for!

I also noticed this time that they actually have a little chicken farm (?) right by the restaurant as well! I guess that’s where they source their delicious organic eggs and chicken 😀

What with the great selection and the constant new daily specials going on here it’s always hard to pick what I want to eat…but today the Rosemary Lamb Sloppy Joe Burger won out! Now, I’m not the biggest lamb fan…but something about sloppy joe on a brioche bun… bring it on!!

Anderson Ranch Lamb and Painted Hills Beef Mix, served Sloppy-Joe style with spicy Rosemary tomato sauce, and kale on a brioche bun served with some goat’s milk cheese and beet salad. Messy, sloppy, juicy, and full of flavor! This burger is a handful AND a mouthful of goodness! Go try it!!

Henry went for the Organic Roasted Chicken Club Sandwich served with Herbed Organic Potatoes. It disappeared pretty quickly so I can only surmise that he enjoyed it! It certainly looked yummy 🙂

Mmmmm~~ Portage Bay Cafe never disappoints and always delivers on flavor, freshness and creativity!  Breakfast of the organic conscious, westcoast champions!

After a casual dinner with Henry’s roommates at the Korean chicken and beer place downstairs from their apartment Henry suggested that we go to Molly Moon’s for dessert!

Molly Moon’s?  Artisanal homemade ice cream?  Uh…yes please!  I’m pretty sure the one we went to was the Wallingford location close to the University of Washington, since it was just a short drive from University Ave.  Side note: How can you not love the fact that their address is 1622 and a 1/2?  Too cute!!

It’s a small little shop that has soft but bright lighting and seems so inviting.  The sweet tantalizing aroma of fresh dairy and homemade waffle cones beckon you inside…but there’s also a cramped line up so you’re kinda rubber-necking it from the door to see the menu and bouncing on your toes wanting to get in 😉

There were so many interesting flavors to choose from and I really was very very torn…. In the end I opted for the Salted Caramel.  Smoooooth, creamy, decadent and delicious without being overly sweet or salty, this was a true ice cream made with care 🙂

Molly Moon’s, you done good.  I’m not a cold foods kinda gal, but I would come back here to try more flavors and just soak in the sweetness and goodness of the atmosphere!  All thumbs up!

Finally able to take a little time to ourselves, Yire and I ventured out of our nice hotel room at Novotel and took a walk down Yonge Street.  We saw Tea Shop 168 and looked at each other…Bubble tea??  Yes, please!

Perhaps it was because it was our first time left to our own faculties at a place where we didn’t have to make a mass group order….but it took us a lot of time to figure out what we wanted to order!  It was as if we’d never ordered food in real civilization before!  Hahaha!

Yire ordered the Matcha Slush and I got the Red Bean Smoothie.  Holy moly, huge cups!  Probably the sole reason we took may too many photos of the drinks was the sheer surprise of how big the cups were!

Sweet, refreshing, and filling…these were a generous accompaniment to what was to come….the waffle!

Named the Stravaganza, there was no way we couldn’t order this!  A waffle topped with strawberry ice cream, strawberries, strawberry sauce, whipped cream and a sprinkle of white chocolate chips….man oh man, this was a real waffle delight!

We spent this nice slice of afternoon relatively worry-free and eating some delicious sweets for lunch 🙂

I’ve always loved Second Cup for the ambience, the quality beverages and the variety of yummy treats.  I definitely have favorite drinks here 🙂  Even before Starbucks, Second Cup was where I developed a taste and love for coffee!

It’s just sad that they haven’t been able to cross over to the West Coast.  I really miss it in Vancouver, so when I’m in an area where there is Second Cup locations I really make an effort to gte in as much as I can!

It’s the morning of the AllTV Korean Culture Caravan finale and with all the work, sweat and tears I’ve put in for the past 4~5 months there’s definitely been a lot leading up to this day.  Excited, amped up and really needing a coffee to kick-start the day!

Double Shot Vanilla Latte is exactly what I need.  Smooth, strong and fragrant…Definitely helped me to stay calm and collected over the somewhat heavy conversation I was having with my boss this morning.

Thought we’d go try to do some grocery shopping for the next day….but apparantly in P.E.I. nobody stays open once dinner time hits.  Oh boo….

Instead we stopped at the A&W across the street where I was introduced to a Coke Float!!  The most amazing thing EVER!!  Cold, creamy, sweet….omg, how have I never had this before?

It was so delicious that I have to now reconsider my prejudice against A&W… 😉

The rain followed us to Quebec City but that wasn’t going to dampen our mood!  With such an amazing venue centre stage at Place d’Youville, we were all seeing a diverse audience of tourists from all over the world!

Our huge tour bus sat atop the crest of the plaza and my team set up the grill and tables to assemble some bomb-ass Avocado Burgers for the team and staff 🙂  Freshly mashed up avocado, lettuce, onions, and tomatoes and BBQ sauce and a nice juicy patty all sandwiched between a sesame bun.

As we grilled up the tasty burgers we started attracting a crowd of our own. Bystanders and tourists were coming up to us and actually asking to buy our burgers…hehe!

August 3rd, 2012. AllTV Korean Culture Caravan – Calgary, Alberta

Oh, hello, Calgary!!  Today we’re performing at Eau Claire Market!  While the performance team was setting up my events team had to head into the city to pick up some essentials that were needed (cable wrappers, duct tape, etc).  As we are hurrying along the way what doth my eyes behold?  Jelly Modern Doughnut truck smack in the middle of downtown!

jelly modern doughnut truck

Oh…..baby………….doughnuts……….!!  With delicious aromas beckoning me and the tantalizing sight of greasy brown paper bags being passed across the window held my gaze I was literally at a standstill….in the end my tastebuds won the struggle and my feet were pulled to that doughnut truck’s window!

How could I not???  Is it not obvious I would have gone for the Maple Bacon Doughnut?  Sticky, messy, and delectably decadent, the soft, chewy, doughnut had a thick sticky maple glaze over top and then a generous sprinkling of sweet, salty almost a soft-jerky like bacon crumble.  Ohhhhh…..what a doughnut delight!  The doughnut is a pretty hefty size and with the richness just oozing off it I couldn’t finish it off in one bite, but I savored it as we ran back to the venue 😉
