My dear friend Chaiyoung finally met the man of her dreams and is getting married!  She had kept everything very low-key so it came quick and sudden, but after seeing her photos with her fiance and hearing her talk, you can’t help but see how happy she is 🙂

Only the best for my Chaiyoung Bebe, I got a pretty Black Forest Cake from Case Del Pane, and Italian Bakery in Newport Village in Port Moody. Delicously decadent with big, rich white chocolate shavings and sumptuously juicy cherries in abundance this cake was just as gorgeous to eat as it was to look at 😀

January 25th, 2013. Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival!

It came to my attention that Vancouver has this newer fesitval going on each year… The Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival!  Participating patisseries, chocolatiers, and cafes in and around Vancouver offer a special hot chocolate and treat.  Kind of a mini-dine out with chocolates!  This is definitely my kind of festival!

I searched for any participating places in the tri-city area and I found that Rubens Chocolates in Port Moody was the only one nearby!  So I made it out there for the De Dutchie!  A Spice Cookie Hot Chocolate inspired by the Netherlands accompanied by a Dutch Spice Cookie!

I love when they use spices with chocolate and this was no exception.  Adding a depth to the flavor and just some extra sparkle this was so so yummy and wonderfully warming for this wet and dark winter night!  They also included a chocolate on my plate as well 😀

Ruben’s Chocolates on Brew Street in the Sutterbrook complex of Port Moody has always been on my radar, but blame that being close often puts things off I’d never actually even been inside the place!  I guess the other reason for that is that they always seem to be closed when I get the urge 😛

It’s a warm little establishment with gelato and an assortment of artistic chocolates, cupcakes and a few other sweets.

I was surprised to see that they actually had a real chocolate “wheel” behind the counter!  I knew then and there that I must try a hot chocolate!

A mixture of the melted chocolate and steamed milk, I have to say…I was slightly disappointed as I would have liked to taste more richness and chocolatey-ness from my beverage..but it did have that great authentic feel to it and at least it wasn’t the watery kind of hot chocolate you get at most places.

All in all it’s a nice little chocolate shop and I would definitely come for another visit and hopefully try some goodies 😀

October 7th, 2012.  Thanksgiving Sunday

thanksgiving 2012

thanksgiving 2012

It’s already Thanksgiving again?  It kinda snuck up on us this year and without any real plans it would have been easy to just pass it by…but at the very last minute Eunice decided that we should celebrate with our own homemade dinner.  Despite all the hard stuff that has been going on we DO have a lot of things to be thankful for and it just felt right that we take the time to do celebrate that!

Since the decision was so last minute Eunice and I literally hit up 3 different supermarkets the night before desperately trying to find any sort of turkey!  What we discovered as a stroke of genius were packages of turkey legs and thighs!  Genius!!  Only the best parts of the turkey all in one package?  HELLO! Jackpot 😉  Along with chicken we also picked up the one pack of turkey dark meat that we found.

Eunice not only lovingly massaged the poultry with butter, herbs and garlic, she also went the extra mile of adding the concoction under the skin to make it even more rich and flavorful!  This sister of mine spares no detail when it comes to our favorite meal in the world 😀

She then popped the poultry in the oven in a pan with some basic veggies (baby red potatoes, carrots, onion and celery) and chicken stock.  We watched with a gleam in our eyes as the skin on the chicken and turkey began to crisp and turn a beautiful golden brown 😉

Ohhhhh, baby!  Look at this gorgeousness!  It is pretty obvious we have an obsession for Thanksgiving meals and for Turkey…!

Eunice did a very basic but wonderfully flavored Vegetable Mix of potatoes, celery, carrots and onion in a bit of broth.  Light but well seasoned and cooked absolutely perfectly so that it wasn’t soggy or mushy.  Veg magic 😀

We love mashed potatoes, but this year Eunice wanted to add a little twist, so we went for Sweet Potato Mash with Toasted Marshmallow and Pecan Topping with a sprinkle of cinnamon!  Eunice knows I am not a big fan of nuts, so she even did me the favor of only putting the pecans on half of the mash 😉

There was also a packaged Three Peppercorn Gravy that Eunice incorporated the turkey drippings into. Mmmmm~!!!  She could have made gravy from scratch, but keep in mind that this was all very last minute.

Same goes for the Stuffing.  But really, I don’t have a ton of complaints about stuffing from a box.  You get all the flavors and when done just right you have it being fluffy with a bit of crispiness.  I don’t care what frou frou foodies say, I like this!

I have a thing for Cranberry Sauce. It’s no secret.  I even taken my own container of cranberry sauce to church holiday dinners knowing that there would be a big chance they wouldn’t be serving it at the buffet line.  That sweet, cool, berry jelly just cuts through the richness and brings a brightness and sparkle to a perfect holiday meal!

Mmmmmmm~~ The spreeaaaad~!!!  There’s really nothing like a sumptuous home-cooked holiday meal 😀

thanksgiving 2012

You know, what I’m really thankful for is the extremely loving support system I’ve had in my sister and her friends through this very trying past month.  With all the heartache and trauma I’d been going through with work, quitting my career, and losing my grandmother, it had been a very tumultuous couple months.  Without my sister’s strength and wisdom and fiery love and defence for me I don’t know how I would have started making a breakthrough.

Holidays are a time to be with the ones you love and those who love you and it’s especially wonderful when you all have the common love of food and eating!

Of course no holiday meal is complete without a pants busting dessert!  Bring on the oven warmed Pumpkin and Apple Pie!  Vanilla ice cream courtesy of Howard and I even hand whipped some whipped cream with real Mexican vanilla! Mmmmmmmmm…. soooooooooo yuuuuuuuuuuuuum!

Another fantastic meal for the books and a HUGE standing ovation for my sister, Eunice, who put together such an epic holiday meal in 24 hours!  You are my hero in so many ways ♥

September 8th, 2012.  T&T Finds 🙂

T&T is full of diverse and interesting Asian yummies and I’ve really taken to shopping there, especially for some delicious Chinese BBQ duck and pork 🙂  But lately I’ve been craving Tom Yum and Laksa and while perusing the aisles I came upon this instant laksa.

Sure, sure, I know instant food is never what the real thing is like, but I couldn’t help being curious how they’d put such a complex, layered dish into a small instant package like this.

I added some Chinese sausage to mine as well, as you can see. The noodles were a good texture and taste, and surprisingly the soup was not thin and bland.  It had a nice creaminess to it from the “coconut milk” packet and a strong seafood flavor coming through along with a little hint of spicy heat.  Obviously it would be better with fresh veggies, aromatics and seafood, but as a quick laksa base I’d say it’s not half bad 🙂
