A gorgeously sunny day and an impromptu stop at Deep Cove in North Van.  Got to sit down and try these “famous” honey doughnuts along with coffee!  Rich fried doughnuts, got one maple glazed and one original.  Honestly, I’m not sure what the hype is about.

Dense and strangely dry to the mouth.  I just wasn’t wowed by it….I expected light, pillowy soft treat with a distinct honey flavor….either we are being spoiled by all the new donuteries and pastry shops around here or I’m just not getting these guys’ point…

Mom was visiting Vancouver for a couple weeks getting Henry settled into school in Seattle and just having a nice vacation with the daughters.  We made a day for just us girls to hang out and spend time together.

I was super excited about the day, and despite the gloomy clouds I was determined to make this a day of fun and activity!  First we headed out to Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver to take in the great view of the waterfront and to nosh on some Coffeebun!

I swear, this stuff is magic!  Soft, cloud-like buns coated in a coffee glaze as it rises in the oven..the result?  This slightly crumbly, sweet coffee exterior around some seriously delicious, moist bread!  I had the Bun Sandwich, which is a classic bun with ham and cheese sandwich.  You’d be surprised how amazing this marriage of savory sweet is

Mom ordered the Korean Shaved Ice which came with chunks of fresh fruit, red bean and vanilla ice cream.  It was a pretty large portion, but mom had no problem finishing it off, since it’s one of her favorite treats!

This place is magic!  It’s totally worth the drive out to sit in the cute, cozy little store with the tantalizing aroma of coffeebuns wafting around you and having your bun served fresh out of the oven.  Buns of LOVE~ ♥

August 24th, 2011.  Work Lunch at Thai House

Boss and I were making the prowl all over North Vancouver all morning looking up previous and prospective clients.  The sun was high and our stomaches were sending us hunger signals….so we walked into Thai House for a time-out.

There’s a tiny patio outside which is nice, while the interior is sexy and modern.  We quickly looked over the lunch specials, made our order and waited anxiously.

Lunch specials come with a side of spring roll and a little salad….I would have appreciated if it had been like a little green papaya salad or something.   You know, just a little oomph rather than just regular ol’ lettuce.  Oh, and there’s 2 of us..so why only 1 roll???

Pra Lunm Long Shong: Boneless chicken stir fried with Thai peanut sauce on a bed of spinach.  Nothing bad to say, really..I love peanut sauce and this one was a good balance of sweet and savory, the chicken was tender. and the rice was well cooked.  I think the sauce may have been slightly bland….a bit more depth would have been nice.

Beef & Eggplant Thai Green Curry – Despite my dislike for coconut, I love Thai curry because of the creamy, delicious, cool coconut milk.  I also used to dislike eggplant a LOT as a kid…but now I love it!  This dish was again, good.  Again, wanted a bit more depth of flavor.

Pad Thai: Stir fried rice noodles with shrimp, ground peanut, chili paste, egg and bean sprout.  I was dissappointed.  There was too much of a ketchupy taste for my liking.  Otherwise the ingredients were all alright.  The noodles were nicely cooked and the shrimp was not over-cooked…but again, the sauce…

In the end?  Nice space, good portion-to price ratio, but I feel that there needs to be a bit more attention to detail and depth in terms of flavor.
