March 11th, 2013. Sister Date Day~

Eunice suggested a sister date of hot pot and a movie.  How could I resist?  What a wonderful idea!  She recommended a place she’s been to in Burnaby called Pearl Hot Pot.

Usually hot pot is a communal food activity, but in this case they bring out individual pots per person and you can choose your own hot pot type.  There are base “combos” dependant on the protein that include veggies and choice of noodles and each combo comes with a soft drink and dessert, too!

Dim sum meets hot pot; you choose off the menu which base hot pot you want and then you have the option of checking off on your menu sheet any additional items your’d like to add on such as vegetable, seafood, or meat items.

It is fun to eat as a group out of a big pot, but I felt that the individual is a nice way to go as well especially if you want different things or if you come by yourself.  Also, it comes with a raw egg, which I love!  I’m egg poacher 😉  I like to drop it in gently and swirl the egg whites but keep the yolk intact and give it a slow poach so it cooks through!

I think the ingredients are not bad (just not great), the fish balls can be kind of a miss as you can see from the gray-ish color it is in the photo….but the meat and seafood are fine, the veggies are firm, and the broth is decently flavored, so I would say that overall it’s okay 😀  As always, hot pot is just super fun to eat and hot soup and dipping things in it is always yummy and interactive!

Xiao Long Bao at Home

I love Xiao Long Bao as much as the next person, but sometimes you just can’t get your sorry ass out to Richmond for a decent soup dumpling.  So what did I do?  Picked up a bag of these babies from T&T!

I also picked up a head of cabbage for the sole purpose of lining my steaming pot.  Placed the frozen dumplings down and proceeded to wait.

Voila!  Not the most amazing certainly, the dumpling skin wasn’t too thick or doughy, the filling inside WAS a little too clumped and just one little blob, and a few of the dumplings cracked as they were defrosting and the soup leaked…but by no means was it terrible.  It still had good flavor, the soup was not bland, and it may be that I just needed to thaw them a little before steaming them.  3/5  🙂

Ding Hao Noodle House

Lunch at Ding Hao Noodle House! Haven’t been back to this place in a while…. so I was interested to see how it would stack up to the memory of food I have from here. Honestly, the memory I had was not phneomenal….So here we go!

I’m not exactly sure how to categorize this place. Is it a Taiwanese noodle house? The menu and bubble tea make me think it is…but it’s not quite the same as other ones I’ve been to like Bubble World or The Well, so I’m thinking it’s perhaps a variation?

Mango Slush
and Lychee Bubble Tea!  Super refreshing and sweet~!

I am not a huge fan of the Dumplings.  The dumpling skin is just too thick and has a strange, doughy texture…It really was a “meh” moment.

One of the noodle dishes on the table was called Noodles with Homemade Meat Sauce.  One plus is that the noodles were cooked well and the noodle-to-sauce ratio was also good.  But it lacked a little flavor.

Another item on the table was Vermicelli Noodle Soup with Chicken Nuggets.  Honestly…I these nuggets are really tasty!  Crispy, flavorful and bite-sized=great!  The soup was pretty good, too, but I think I prefer regular noodles to the vermicelli.  They were just too slippery!

The verdict is:  I will come back.  It’s inexpensive, the nuggets are good, the soup is good and the bubble tea is yummy!

Mom and I stuffed ourselves full at lunch….but that doesn’t mean we’re not going to go downstairs and look at some more food!

In Korean department stores the bottom most floor is for food. There are always delicious snacks, banchan and foods everywhere you turn. And in a fancy department store like Galleria..well, there’s just a multitude of pretty yummies!

I kinda regret not picking up some of these delicious looking waffles…!

But of course I couldn’t just pass up on the gigantic dumplings!  One of the things I miss most about Korea are these bigger-than-your-fist dumplings with a thin, almost bread-like skin and full of piping hot tofu, veggie, pork filling.  Of course I had to take one of these babies home 🙂
