February 21st, 2013.  Matcha Latte @ DAVIDsTEA

DAVIDsTEA

DAVIDsTEA

I never really used to be one to add milk to my teas, but since working at DAVIDsTEA and realizing the true amazingness of the world of tea lattes I’ve been going latte crazy!  Inspired by the Brown Rice Green Tea Latte at Bubble World, I thought I’d try to make something similar at work 🙂

DAVIDsTEA

DAVIDsTEA

This particular concoction is 2 perfect DAVIDsTEA spoons of Genmaicha and 1 shot of Matcha Matsu with frothed Soy Milk with a good dose of agave for sweetner.

The sweet toasted rice flavor of the Genmaicha with the brightness of the Matcha and the milk bringing balance to the cup….Ahhhh, perfection!  Just call me the Latte Master 😉

Finally able to take a little time to ourselves, Yire and I ventured out of our nice hotel room at Novotel and took a walk down Yonge Street.  We saw Tea Shop 168 and looked at each other…Bubble tea??  Yes, please!

Perhaps it was because it was our first time left to our own faculties at a place where we didn’t have to make a mass group order….but it took us a lot of time to figure out what we wanted to order!  It was as if we’d never ordered food in real civilization before!  Hahaha!

Yire ordered the Matcha Slush and I got the Red Bean Smoothie.  Holy moly, huge cups!  Probably the sole reason we took may too many photos of the drinks was the sheer surprise of how big the cups were!

Sweet, refreshing, and filling…these were a generous accompaniment to what was to come….the waffle!

Named the Stravaganza, there was no way we couldn’t order this!  A waffle topped with strawberry ice cream, strawberries, strawberry sauce, whipped cream and a sprinkle of white chocolate chips….man oh man, this was a real waffle delight!

We spent this nice slice of afternoon relatively worry-free and eating some delicious sweets for lunch 🙂

Ding Hao Noodle House

Lunch at Ding Hao Noodle House! Haven’t been back to this place in a while…. so I was interested to see how it would stack up to the memory of food I have from here. Honestly, the memory I had was not phneomenal….So here we go!

I’m not exactly sure how to categorize this place. Is it a Taiwanese noodle house? The menu and bubble tea make me think it is…but it’s not quite the same as other ones I’ve been to like Bubble World or The Well, so I’m thinking it’s perhaps a variation?

Mango Slush
and Lychee Bubble Tea!  Super refreshing and sweet~!

I am not a huge fan of the Dumplings.  The dumpling skin is just too thick and has a strange, doughy texture…It really was a “meh” moment.

One of the noodle dishes on the table was called Noodles with Homemade Meat Sauce.  One plus is that the noodles were cooked well and the noodle-to-sauce ratio was also good.  But it lacked a little flavor.

Another item on the table was Vermicelli Noodle Soup with Chicken Nuggets.  Honestly…I these nuggets are really tasty!  Crispy, flavorful and bite-sized=great!  The soup was pretty good, too, but I think I prefer regular noodles to the vermicelli.  They were just too slippery!

The verdict is:  I will come back.  It’s inexpensive, the nuggets are good, the soup is good and the bubble tea is yummy!

Phnom Penh

October 6th, 2011.  Dinner w/ Rachel at Phnom Penh

I FINALLY got my butt out to Phnom Penh out in Chinatown in Vancouver.  It’s such a well-known fixture and I can’t believe I’d never been her to eat before.  Of course Rachel was up for some delicious eats with me   After a brief wait we were herded through the crowded small space and seated at one of their large round tables right along side an older couple.  Community dining at it’s most intimate 😉

The Butter Beef always seems to get rave reviews, so we had to order it.  Super tender, thin slices of beef just melted in my mouth with such a great kick from the acidic sauce and the fried shallots gave a great “crunch”.  I love how the cilantro lent a beautiful herby, refreshing flavor.

Another one of their signature dishes are the Chicken Wings with Lemon Pepper Dipping Sauce.  Piping hot, super flavorful and crispy skin and super juicy meat inside..and the dipping sauce is money!!  Really, I was licking my fingers~~~~!

Well, we couldn’t leave without a treat.  Rachel had a Strawberry Bubble Tea and I had the Lychee Bubble Tea.  A sweet ending to an awesome meal!

After another fun evening of grass volleyball we headed out to Corner 23, a Taiwanese bubble tea joint on Cambie.  The great thing about these places are how afordable all the items are and it’s pretty tasty, too!  I ordered the Eggplant & Pork in Hot Garlic Sauce.  All elements that I enjoy and the meal is made complete with the bowl of rice and side dishes.  Good meal, new friends and lots of laughs!

One of the best value dishes at Bubble World is the Salty Peppery Chicken.  A large portion of salty, peppery, deep fried goodness in a bowl for only $5.25.  For $7.00 you can get all that with a big bowl of noodle soup!!  Salty Peppery Chicken with Noodle in Soup.

Richmond Night Market

December 19, 2011

June 12th, 2011.  Richmond Night Market!!

richmond night market

Of the highlights of summer in Vancouver are the various night markets.  Of those the Richmond Night Market is probably the most popular.  With tons of stalls with cheap “made in China” merchandise on one half and a vast plethora of Asian eats on the other half, RNM is totally worth the drive!

Eunice, Henry & I wanted to make as many memories as siblings together before he went off to school in Seattle, so we made an effort to go spend an evening together.  Exciting!!

Giant Turkey Drumsticks on the grill!!  My sister and I are huge fans of turkey.  Turkey just brings up these nostalgic, festive feelings that we both love to go back to any time of the year.  Sadly, we didn’t get to try these this time around, but we were pretty happy just seeing something that warms our hearts so much!

We love Dim SumBubble Tea!!!  There are many dim sum stalls, so it’s really about who’s got the better deal or the better looking items.  I love the Sui Mai and Har Gow and my bubble tea was so nice and refreshing!!  I got the Peach Green Tea.

I was recommended to try the Giant Sweet Corn.  I got one slathered with butter and a Cajun seasoning and left it with Henry while I got in line for the Hurricane Potatoes.  You know how delicious it is?  So delicious that by the time Eunice and I got back to our patch of the table it was all gone…!!   Henry sheepishly said “I couldn’t help it..it was really good…!”  Luckily I had one bite in the beginning.  Sweet, juicy goodness!!!  Yum!!!

Thai Satays.  I got 1 pork, 1 beef and 1 chicken.  I got pretty lucky because these were not over-cooked.  I only wished the satay sauce on it could have been stronger.  Still pretty good, so I went back for more!

I swear.  Every year the Hurricane Potato stand has the longest line and it takes FOREVER to get a hold of one!  Those darn Koreans sure know how to come up with a home-run product.  They stick a potato on a stick and somehow cut it so that it slices into a string of chips.  They then coat it with thin batter and deep fry it and then coat it with your choice of flavor and then drizzle ketchup.  Mmmmm~~ Mmmm good!

Say what you will, but I love the little savory puff balls with bits of octopus inside that is Takoyaki!!  I always can’t wait long enough and end up burning the inside of my mouth…but I still love it!!  With plenty of bonito flakes and mayo & takoyaki sauce on top this one is always a treat!

Japanese Yam Fries.  Nothing spectacular…but the mayo and nori topping really just makes it so delicious and yummy!  Plus it’s easy to eat while walking around!

Japanese Onion Rings with Wasabi Mayo….Delicious!!!!  Piping hot, crunchy exterior coating and super creamy mayo.  Soooooo~~~~ yum!!!

We were sooooooo full by the end of the evening!!   We got some fun little souvenirs, had tons of fun and ate til we dropped!!

After a long work day Eric and i hopped over to Koryodang for some late night coffee, cake & chat! It was a well deserved pat on the back after a long hard day, plus it was fun to bond with my new work dongseng, Eric~~!

I had an Iced Latte and Passion Fruit Cheesecake.

In all honesty, we don’t really like the coffee here.  It’s not really all that good.  But you don’t have a lot of options for late night cake & coffee in Midtown’s Koreatown past 11:30pm…so, hey, we gotta make do!
