So, walking back up Robson of course we had to follow up with our regular ritual of bubble tea!  Street Fighter+Bubble Tea = The best!

This particular location is tiny and doesn’t offer food (no salty peppery chicken nuggets? sad!), but it has a game station that evokes all kinds of childhood nostalgia!

Sure, more than 10 years later I still suck, but the boys think I’m cute for trying so hard 😉

March 16th, 2013. Miura Waffle Milk Bar

Reunion brunch with Joyce! Since leaving Sylvan I haven’t seen Joyce, but we’ve been able to keep in touch through Facebook and judging by each others’ posts we both love food! What better way to reconnect than over Vancouver’s newest fad….Waffle sandwiches!

Miura Waffle Milk Bar is a Japanese waffle joint that’s small but clean. Already gaining acclaim by being featured on hit foodie show “You Gotta Eat Here” it’s one of those places considered a hidden gem.

We couldn’t just choose between savory or sweet so we went for 1 of each and split them: First the Hoisin Sando! Sweet and savory hoisin ground pork sausage sandwiched in with bright and aromatic cilantro, refreshing and clear cucumber and a mildly tangy carrot and radish pickle. Reminiscent of a bahn mi but slightly milder. I found that the waffle was appropriately crispy and soft at the same time although bordering on that very thin line of being slightly more dense than I prefer. Delicious? Yes!

Oh, And I also got a Maple Yoggy Milk. Because….I love maple and I what goes better with waffles than milkshake! Not overly sweet with a hint of maple. I would have liked a stronger maple flavor, but it was certainly refreshing and creamy!

Next we had the Fruits and Cream Sando! Served between the same waffle with the season’s fresh fruit and cream, today’s fruit was strawberries! Okay, what’s more fitting than tart, sweet, juicy strawberries with a rich and creamy whipped cream against delicious waffle! The hoisin sando had filled us, but the fruits and cream sando put us over the edge 😉

Busy stuffing our mouths I’m surprised we got so much talking done in between! It was wonderful to reconnect and to see how much had happened in our lives since we worked together 🙂 Thanks for suggesting such a fun place, Joyce!

Pearl Hot Pot (Burnaby)

February 14, 2014

March 11th, 2013. Sister Date Day~

Eunice suggested a sister date of hot pot and a movie.  How could I resist?  What a wonderful idea!  She recommended a place she’s been to in Burnaby called Pearl Hot Pot.

Usually hot pot is a communal food activity, but in this case they bring out individual pots per person and you can choose your own hot pot type.  There are base “combos” dependant on the protein that include veggies and choice of noodles and each combo comes with a soft drink and dessert, too!

Dim sum meets hot pot; you choose off the menu which base hot pot you want and then you have the option of checking off on your menu sheet any additional items your’d like to add on such as vegetable, seafood, or meat items.

It is fun to eat as a group out of a big pot, but I felt that the individual is a nice way to go as well especially if you want different things or if you come by yourself.  Also, it comes with a raw egg, which I love!  I’m egg poacher 😉  I like to drop it in gently and swirl the egg whites but keep the yolk intact and give it a slow poach so it cooks through!

I think the ingredients are not bad (just not great), the fish balls can be kind of a miss as you can see from the gray-ish color it is in the photo….but the meat and seafood are fine, the veggies are firm, and the broth is decently flavored, so I would say that overall it’s okay 😀  As always, hot pot is just super fun to eat and hot soup and dipping things in it is always yummy and interactive!

February 21st, 2013.  Matcha Latte @ DAVIDsTEA

DAVIDsTEA

DAVIDsTEA

I never really used to be one to add milk to my teas, but since working at DAVIDsTEA and realizing the true amazingness of the world of tea lattes I’ve been going latte crazy!  Inspired by the Brown Rice Green Tea Latte at Bubble World, I thought I’d try to make something similar at work 🙂

DAVIDsTEA

DAVIDsTEA

This particular concoction is 2 perfect DAVIDsTEA spoons of Genmaicha and 1 shot of Matcha Matsu with frothed Soy Milk with a good dose of agave for sweetner.

The sweet toasted rice flavor of the Genmaicha with the brightness of the Matcha and the milk bringing balance to the cup….Ahhhh, perfection!  Just call me the Latte Master 😉

Mini mocchi filled with red bean paste~ one was regular and the other was peanut dusted.  Perfectly soft as mocchi should be, with a subtly sweet red bean filling and so wonderfully bite sized!  Yum 😀

August 24th, 2012. Xiao Long Bao at Home

I love Xiao Long Bao as much as the next person, but sometimes you just can’t get your sorry ass out to Richmond for a decent soup dumpling.  So what did I do?  Picked up a bag of these babies from T&T!

I also picked up a head of cabbage for the sole purpose of lining my steaming pot.  Placed the frozen dumplings down and proceeded to wait.

Voila!  Not the most amazing certainly, the dumpling skin wasn’t too thick or doughy, the filling inside WAS a little too clumped and just one little blob, and a few of the dumplings cracked as they were defrosting and the soup leaked…but by no means was it terrible.  It still had good flavor, the soup was not bland, and it may be that I just needed to thaw them a little before steaming them.  3/5  🙂

August 19th, 2012. Tea Shop 168 – Willowdale (North York, ON)

Finally able to take a little time to ourselves, Yire and I ventured out of our nice hotel room at Novotel and took a walk down Yonge Street.  We saw Tea Shop 168 and looked at each other…Bubble tea??  Yes, please!

Perhaps it was because it was our first time left to our own faculties at a place where we didn’t have to make a mass group order….but it took us a lot of time to figure out what we wanted to order!  It was as if we’d never ordered food in real civilization before!  Hahaha!

Yire ordered the Matcha Slush and I got the Red Bean Smoothie.  Holy moly, huge cups!  Probably the sole reason we took may too many photos of the drinks was the sheer surprise of how big the cups were!

Sweet, refreshing, and filling…these were a generous accompaniment to what was to come….the waffle!

Named the Stravaganza, there was no way we couldn’t order this!  A waffle topped with strawberry ice cream, strawberries, strawberry sauce, whipped cream and a sprinkle of white chocolate chips….man oh man, this was a real waffle delight!

We spent this nice slice of afternoon relatively worry-free and eating some delicious sweets for lunch 🙂

Everything from comfort foods like pies, crumbles, whoopie pies and big chcolate chip cookies to more refined things like tiramisu and creme brulee.

They really make dessert fun by adding little twists like deconstructed s’mores, mint chocolate meringue and precious little cakes with gold!

April 7th, 2012.  Easter Dim Sum!

Some more eats over the Easter Weekend?  Yes, please!  Dim sum?  Double yes!  I was able to round up a few friends to partake in some Easter Dim Sum 😉

Pan Fried Turnip Cakes turned out to be really great!  Simply seasoned, not mushy, and with the perfect crisp fry on it.  I’ll keep it in mind for next time.

Spring Rolls are always a nice addition to a dim sum meal.  I liked how these ones were not over-fried or greasy, the wrapper crisped up and crumbled just right and the filling to wrapper ratio was good.

wah wing restaurant

wah wing restaurant

We got one of their special items of the day, Spinach and Shrimp Crystal Dumplings.  Pretty large in side and packed tight with goodies, the shrimp in the filling still had a little “crunch” to it as it should, and the spinach lent a good flavor…and color 🙂  nI still prefer chives, but this one worked well.

Dim sum ain’t dim sum without Sticky Rice!  Sticky rice, savory sausage, and the smokiness of being wrapped up and steamed in lotus leaf.

I spotted Xiao Long Bao on the menu.  I couldn’t resist trying it!  Well…..I wasn’t super impressed….not enough soup inside and they just weren’t right…

And since Richard is all about balls…..(hahahaha!) of course the Steamed Beef Balls made an appearance on the table!  Oh my…..they didn’t look exactly appetizing….so I left it for the boys to tackle.  I was already full!

Another satisfactory meal!  Always better when you’re with friends and even more s when you are eating with friends who love food 😉
