August 31st, 2011. Group Dinner at Vij’s
I love summer!! Long days, warm sunshine, and activities with friends! Tonight I’m finally trying out Vij’s…..excitement! Phil had initiated a group dinner for anyone interested and of course I had to take advantage of the invitation!
We got to Vancouver’s theatre district on South Granville between 7pm~7:30pm knowing that we’d have to wait…just how long we’d have to wait…well…that was a different story. Since Vij’s doesn’t take reservations we just had to wait for a table for 9 people to open up in their tiny little space.
Luckily there are baskets of nibbles being touted around by the staff so that the hungry waiting patrons have something to keep them..well..waiting some more..! Well, we knew that in the end our patience would be rewarded, so we happily struck up conversations and got to know each other….for a good 2.5 hours. LOL!
All the girls were raving about the Chai…so Chai Tea it is!! I guess it was a bit lackluster. I was expecting it to have a bit more depth.
I got the Beef Shortribs Braised in Yogurt, Tomato and Cumin Curry. Oh, my GOODNESS!! Tender, tender melt-in-your-mouth beef and the sauce? Wow….so delicious! You can taste the freshness of the tomatoes, the creaminess of the yogurt and the beautiful cumin just bringing everything up a notch. I love that they aren’t stingy with the sauce. More than enough, but at the end of the meal, no waste. Impressive!
Lawrence really enjoyed his Wine Marinated Lamb Popsicles in Fenugreek Cream Curry on Tumeric and Spinach Potatoes. He had this thoughtful look on his face. He was also generous enough to share some of his meal. So good!! Tender lamb and the SAUCE! Deliciously creamy, great depth and had a great sneaking kick at the end. Love!
On the table: a Tamarind Marinated Rib Eye w/ Mango Puree and Roasted Bell Pepper. Again, LOVELY sauce! And the meat was big!! Another hit
Lemon-Ghee Marinated & Grilled Organic Chicken Breast with Roasted Garlic, Cashews and Tangy Tomato Curry. Bursts of flavor, fresh ingredients and juicy chicken! Yummy!! Seriously, Vij’s really knows how to do it right!
Keep the Naan coming!! And this green chutney or whatever was also delicious!
All in all, Vij’s does not disappoint. Each dish is SO well done, in terms of all the protiens being cooked to perfection and the freshness of the ingredients bringing out such bright flavors in the sauces. There wasn’t a single dish that was a let down. Love it and it’s totally worth the wait!!!
