March 15th, 2011. Exploring Manhattan
Big Nick’s Burger & Pizza Joint on the Upper West Side is literally a heritage establishment dating back to 1962. It’s a complete dive with red neon lighting inside, peeling wooden booths, and a menu so big that both Chef Gordon Ramsey & Chef Robert Irvine would flip out.
A very belligerent waitress seated me in a booth in front of the pizza bar, which was at least a little bit brighter than the rest of the restaurant since I was close to the door. Well, here goes nothing!
I had a pizza craving so I ordered a pizza by the slice. This one was an Italian Ham Pizza (or something like that) to which I added sprinkles of oregano, chili flakes and parmesan cheese. Well, I wished the pizza was hotter since the cheese wasn’t really very melty, but I liked the tomato sauce. Not too heavy handed and good seasoning. But the slices of ham were just too salty. Like, really salty…Maybe more cheese would have helped soften the flavor a bit.
And what?? Waffle Fries?? I’m all over that!! I can’t say anything bad about it….it was delish
Well, I can see the pull of the place. A 24 hour greasy spoon spot that’s been in the neighborhood forever with a menu the size of your phonebook. But the food wasn’t really amazing. Maybe I should have gone for one of their legendary burgers?
