November 17th, 2010. Sticky Rice Thai & Asian Cuisine
Ever since hearing that Liz was working at a Thai restaurant and that she wears a traditional Thai dress for it we knew we had to go visit!! I guess where it’s situated you could say it’s White Rock..anyways, it’s a Thai place in Surrey!
The space is really lovely and well decorated. Traditional items and colors everywhere, but not an overload like some places. I mean, come on, we don’t want to eat in a cluttered space! The waitresses wearing the Thai dresses were a nice special touch. Funny enough all the waitresses that evening were white..haha!
The tea comes out in these gorgeous pots with matching cups….eek, so beautiful!!
Side salad that came with one of the meals. Came with a mango dressing.
Som Tum Thai: Papaya, tomato, garlic, chili, palm sugar, lime juice, tamarind sauce, fish sauce and roasted crushed peanuts. This salad was a great opener! Tons of flavor, fiery kick and crisp ingredients!!
Pad Thai: Sweet and sour fried rice noodles with bean curds, eggs, bean sprouts and as you can see…a generous amount of lemon and peanuts on the side!! Another total hit!! Loved the texture of the noodles, the sauce was light but full of flavor and a great balance between sour and sweet. Mmmmmmm~~!
Shrimp Nuggets with Sweet Sauce. I didn’t get to try this one..but I bet it was good
Now, we’re talking!! Grilled Beef Short Rib with Sticky Rice: Grilled beef short rib in ginger and Thai spices. I love how the rice comes steamed in a woven bamboo container…so adorable! Next time I totally want to try this one!
Many Thai places the rice comes out kinda hard and all stuck together like a puck. As you can see, the sticky rice here looks nice and moist. They used a good amount of coconut milk to give the rice that slightly creamy taste. Plus 5 points!!
Of course we couldn’t NOT have the Tamarind Candy after the meal…when in Rome, you know 😉
Overall, we all really enjoyed the meal. Even though I didn’t get to try everyone’s, from what I did try I was impressed with the level of freshness of the ingredients. I was also impressed that with all the different flavors residing in each dish there seemed to be a flawless balance achieved. Next time I’m here I definitely want to try the curries and more grilled stuff!
